Update: Blue Light Hamilton

With the colder weather Blue Light has taken the opportunity to get some work done on the BBQ.  The BBQ's WOF was due so the top team at Motavation checked it over for us.

Thanks to our relationship with our Gas supply and Get Wet Waikato we were put in touch with Aber Holdings Limited where we purchased a reduced price 18kg Gas Bottle that the Plumber Man Hamilton fixed to the trailer with extra piping etc. We then gave it a run at a Te Wananga O Aotearoa Sports day where 150 students needed feeding on the 23rd May 2018.

On the way back to base I called in to our mates at Z Five Cross Roads to thank them for having us part of Z Good in the Hood this year.

Leading Fiji accommodation provider, Crusoe’s Retreat donates to the Flood Relief Fund.

Leading Fiji accommodation provider Crusoe’s Retreat has become part of the global Social Giving community by donating to the Fiji Flood Relief Fund.

Cyclone Josie hit Fiji in early April and brought flooding to the main island of Viti Levu.

The friendly and professional accommodation team at Crusoe’s Retreat knew they had to help.

“It is really important for us to give back to the local community,” says Scott Lee at Crusoe’s Retreat. Social Giving is the philosophy which sees others benefit from the generosity of businesses.

“For every room night booked at Crusoe’s Retreat we will donate $1 to a flood relief fund,” adds Scott.  And for every team building retreat held at Crusoe’s Retreat they will donate:

  • $100 for 10 to 20 people
  • $200 for 21 to 50 people
  • $300 for 51+ people

“Being a part of the community, we care about people’s health and well-being which is why it’s important for us to offer our continual support,” adds Scott.

Located on Fiji’s stunningly beautiful Coral Coast, Crusoe’s Retreat is keen to help ensure Fiji retains its natural beauty and help its people get back on their feet.  The holiday resort did not get affected by the floods and is looking as stunning as ever with a number of new features such as the Taki Beach Bar & Grill which is proving very popular with guests.

New Zealand’s leading green building experts Green Homes New Zealand are getting fired up.

New Zealand’s leading green building experts Green Homes New Zealand are getting fired up.

Things are heating up for New Zealand’s home building experts Green Homes New Zealand.

New Zealand’s first international standards (ISO) approved Green Building Company, Green Homes New Zealand, are building a $12 million development at one of New Zealand’s most desirable locations, Pauanui.

Sitting on the development site is currently an old house. The team at Green Homes New Zealand reached out to the Coromandel Fire Brigades to see if they can give the house a fantastic send off.

During the weekend of 5th and 6th May, in conjunction with several of the great teams at the Coromandel Fire Brigades, the house will be used for valuable training for the area’s fire fighters with it all culminating in the house being burnt to the ground!

“We are pleased to be able to support the community in the training of the local, mostly volunteer, firefighters who provide a very valuable service,” says Green Homes New Zealand general manager Andrew Olsen.

Fire and emergency volunteers from Pauanui, Tairua and Whangamata fire brigades will be sending Firefighters qualified in breathing apparatus to be trained by six instructors from the National training centre. The Onemana rural fire force will also be there on the day providing exposure protection from an external position.

The training will show the progression of the four stages of a developing fire incipient, growth, fully developed and decay. “The opportunity for a firefighter to witness the growth of fire in a controlled environment is invaluable,” adds Andrew.

The fire training will move to the upper level of the house where fire fighters will demonstrate the firefighter’s skill of suppression and attack. A small fire is lit in the corner of a room and then the fire fighters move in in pairs to cool the fire, to remove the heat and control the fire to eventually putting it out

This event will be open to the public who wish to see the brave firefighters in action. “If you would like to come to watch we will be establishing Safe Zones from which you can safely watch this showcase,” adds Andrew.

This exciting event signifies the start of the Pauanui Green project as the earthworks machines will move on to the development site the following week. “After many years of hard work, the whole Green Homes New Zealand team is very eager to finally see the site being transformed into our new and exciting vision of an energy-efficient  future proofed lifestyle,” comments Andrew.

The Pauanui Green development will be the first of its type in New Zealand and will offer buyers the prospect to own an architecturally designed, modern, energy-efficient, future-proofed home in the tranquil coastal town of Pauanui, located on the idyllic Coromandel Peninsula.

Hamilton Blue Light Annual PCT Challenge Update

image003.jpg

On the 1st March 2018, Hamilton Blue light held their annual Physical Competency Test (PCT) Challenge at Melville Intermediate.

This year there were 48 teams that participated from schools as far away as Te Kuiti, Waitetuna and Horotiu Primary, as well as our local Hamilton Schools. The event generated a massive attendance of 192 year 7 & 8 students, each school selecting 2 boys and 2 girls to compete for the Douglas Grant Memorial Trophy.

Douglas Grant was a soldier in the NZ Defence force 1 SAS group. In 2011 he was deployed to Afghanistan. During his time there he was called to help rescue a group that were held up by insurgents in the British council diplomatic offices in Kabul. It was at this time he was shot and killed.  Donations were made to the family but were not needed so given to Hamilton Blue light. A trophy was subsequently made in Douglas’ memory and the PCT trophy was created. This trophy represents teamwork, going the extra mile for your mates and putting in your absolute best effort.

Each year the students have a chance to win the trophy and display it in their school showing the effort made. A new challenge, where teams had to work together to solve clues to uncover ‘who robbed the local bank’, was introduced this year proving a real test as only Whatawhata Primary Teams A & B, Rhode Street Primary and St Joseph’s Fairfield solved the case and named the correct offender within the 20 minute time allocation.  As always the Police Car Push and the PCT was a hit, the students were encouraged by new Probationary Constables and usual Blue light committee members who are given the day off usual duties to mix and mingle with our future champions of Community spirit.

Congratulations to the overall winner of the day Fairfield Intermediate who were presented with the PCT Trophy on Friday the 2nd March 2018, at a special school assembly and will represent Hamilton Blue Light in the National PCT Challenge at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Porirua in November 2018. We all wish them the best of luck!!

Community and online support still needed to help a talented South Auckland student achieve a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Help get Dataney to New York.png

We first brought you the story of Dataney Pownall last year, who has been selected to attend a summer camp in New York but lacked the funding to achieve his dream. In a urgent update, Dataney still needs your support to get him on that plane to New York.

Described as a young man with a positive outlook, a drive to learn and a strong desire to help others, Dataney Pownall and his family is appealing the community to help with the high cost of the associated air fares and insurance.

Every little bit helps. You can donate here https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/carolturner4dataney. If you can’t donate, you can help spread awareness by sharing this story with your friends and family.

Century 21 Gold Real Estate in Manurewa has assisted this family in the past selling their home and has taken a particular interest in this story.

“This is an amazing family, Carol (Dataney’s Mum), is an inspiration to working mothers. A solo mum working her butt off to ensure her kids don’t become another South Auckland statistic is an inspiration to others and after meeting with Dataney I can attest she’s doing a great job” says Century 21 Gold Manurewas principal Derryn Mayne.

“I first met Carol and her kids four years ago when I listed their home for sale. Through social media I’ve kept in contact with Carol and was really excited to get on board and help raise awareness” says Derryn.

“He has embraced every moment of this journey and taken every opportunity to better himself,” says his mother, Carol Pownall.

Dataney is just 14 years old but has already achieved much in both in his education and in the community with hard work and dedication. During his time at Dilworth Boys Boarding he was elected Head Boy of the campus, head of house and he had a role on the student council. He also won a number of the schools and regional areas speech competitions and also achieved the Principals All-Rounder Choice Award for 2016.

Dataney gets actively involved in his community by entertaining the elderly at rest homes, helping out at his primary school during the midterm breaks and is currently working on a community project to share some Bible teachings on a Christian radio station while also speaking at a youth group.

“He will make a positive difference in the world by putting ' his' mark on it through the experiences he is exposed to. I would love to give him more experiences and are asking for help to put this deserving young man on that airplane!” adds Carol Pownall.

This is great opportunity for the community and local businesses to donate to Dataney’s trip.

Century 21 Gold Real Estate are started the ball rolling with a $200 donation and challenge other businesses, particularly those in Real Estate to match this contribution. Come on everyone get behind Dataney and send him to New York. Click the link below:

New Zealand’s leading dog treats and subscription box, PupPost announces partnership with DC Rescue Dogs.

Every pup deserves a loving home, so in an act of social giving New Zealand’s newest dog toy and treat subscription box, PupPost, has announced a new partnership with DC Rescue Dogs.

“Customers can donate money at the checkout to support DC Rescue Dogs,” says Shelley Bishop, Social Media Manager for PupPost.

DC Rescue Dogs is a non-profit organisation based in the Waikato which takes in rescue dogs and puppies and then places them into forever homes throughout the Waikato and Auckland regions.  All dogs that come through their care are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and registered with the council and NZCAR.

As a non-profit charity organisation they rely on support from the public to continue doing the good work they do. “All of their team members are volunteers working full time jobs, so every cent the rescue makes goes back into the dogs,” comments Shelley.

“Donations to the DC Rescue Dogs are always greatly appreciated and are absolutely vital for Cherie and her team to continue helping those pups in need,” adds Shelley.

As customers picks out the perfect box for their pup, they also have the option to add a donation to the DC Rescue Dogs. “Not only are you doing something good for your own dog, you are also helping to improve the life of those pups in need by helping them get to their forever homes,” comments Shelley.

Gails of Tamahere are huge believers in social giving through their support of the Lions Club in Tamahere

At Gails of Tamahere, social giving is something which has major importance within the business. Gail Jones and her team have been long-time supporters of the Lions Clubs New Zealand foundation and are giving back to their community through their support of the Tamahere branch of the foundation.

Tamahare Lions.jpg

“We are proud to be able to give back to our community through supporting the Lions Clubs. These people give back by providing several activities to help our youth which is something we can all get behind” says Gail Jones, owner of Gails of Tamahere.

The Lions Clubs foundation has been around since 1917, when Chicago-born Melvin Jones had the idea of reaching beyond business activities out into the community. The Lions Clubs reached New Zealand in 1955, having grown to introduce white canes for the blind and help their communities in several ways.

The Lions Clubs New Zealand has several functions. For the most part, they are concerned with helping the youth communities by providing upskilling opportunities and support groups. Gails of Tamahere supports the Tamahere branch of the Lions Clubs by providing a facility for the people involved to have meetings, as well as providing financial support where necessary.

Social giving is something which sees others benefit from the generosity of businesses. Gail believes that it is not only something which her company should do, but all companies across New Zealand.

“Social giving is something we can all get on board with. It is about giving back to the communities which we operate in. People within our communities can benefit from what we do and that is the ultimate reward” says Gail.

Golf: Game of life tees up Pender

Quite often when Jared Pender used to fill out his scorecards in the make-or-break world of professional golf mostly in Australia, it wasn't easy to park thoughts of doing the sums on his daily budgetary requirements on the road.

The New Zealand Social Giving Programme Officially Launched in Hamilton

By Liam Prime, MediaPA Intern

A function that had been highly anticipated for a number of weeks, Social Giving’s launch event on Wednesday night was a highly successful night with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that left everyone with a smile on their face and excited for the next big event.

Social Giving is the Brainchild of MediaPA’s CEO, Phillip Quay. Social Giving’s mission is to help give small to medium sized businesses the chance to give back to the community. By helping connect business owners to either charities or sportspeople needing funding, MediaPA does not partake in  dealing with the financial side of the negotiation to provide full backing to the recipients.

Phillip Quay noted that “Social Giving is about supporting those who are results driven, helping give back to the Hamilton community is what Social Giving is all about”.

The night was a celebration for both recipients and clients of Social Giving with the emphasis of the event being on fun and establishing friendships rather than work. With sponsorships from the likes of Lakeman Brewery, Forgotten World Adventures, MediaPA, Carlton Party Hire and Grain Exchange, the event was a huge success.

Starting the night with light bites and drinks to make people feel welcome upon entry, greetings and light conversations to get to know others and their company backgrounds were underway. Once everyone was seated the night was ready to begin. Phillip Quay and co-host Clare Gallagher began by discussing the history of Social Giving and how it helps the community before shifting the speaking to the recipients and what Social Giving means to them.

Aunty P began with a heartfelt speech about the ups and downs that the Hamilton Homeless Trust has encountered, giving meals to those in desperate need.

Aunty P said: “We are very thankful for the help that has been provided from those here tonight and even the smallest contribution goes a long way”.

Following the Homeless Trust was New Zealand Riding for The Disabled Association (NZRDA), Hannah Doughty brought to light the need for sponsors for their horses and their goal of eventually having all of their horses sponsored. Unfortunately Jared Pender was not able to make it due to golfing commitments but was given a well-documented speech on his success in the golfing industry. Adam Muir and MediaPA’s Tristan Hooker discussed Kawhia Cruise and the funding it provides to Multiple Sclerosis. “It’s all about family here, if you have anything with wheels and want to go to Kawhia and back, then this is the family for you” Adam’s words made a big impact on all that were there.

Kerry Babbage from Mates, Men Empowering Women Empowering Men, gave an uplifting speech on how men can break the barrier of discussing their feelings. Speaking to Kerry earlier, he mentioned the charity’s foundation in Australia 15 years ago and said “Both Australians and New Zealand men have an image of being ‘blokes’ that shouldn’t mention their feelings and bottle it all up, something of which is both unhealthy and unfair.” Music Moves Me Trust (MMMT) had both Helen and Kath talk about the positive impact musical theory has on their clients, while also expressing the importance of funding for their equipment. Last but not Least, the Waimarie Community House in Hamilton East closed the event by showing an insight into how the house was founded and jokingly saying “on the first day we got a phone and a few pieces of paper and we felt like we were in business”.

Despite all their funding, they are still in need of people with either accounting or business skills and would be thrilled to take these type of people on board.

Finishing the night with final farewells and last bites of dessert, people were left raving about Social Giving’s positive impact to Hamilton and the limitless potential it brings.

Simon Lowe, former owner of Aspen Manor said “The friendly environment from peers and staff made it feel more like a fun event rather than a work environment” The emphasis on fun rather than business was evident for the night and impacted the success of the event, making everyone in anticipation for the next opportunity to attend such a unique event.
